Man bras, available in black, white, pink and other colours, have been the top seller in Japan recently. Ever since their launch at the end of 2008 on the biggest Japanese online shopping mall Rakuten, the Wishroom Shop has sold hundreds of men’s bras for 30 dollars (2,800 yen / 200 yuan back then) each.
The Wishroom Shop is a Japanese online lingerie retailer that sells men’s bras, men’s panties as well as lingerie for women. The kind of men’s bras they sell are specifically designed for men’s body shape, with its bra cup smaller and flatter. The material of the bras are made to be the same as that of men’s panties, soft and resilient. The size is between 80 to 85 A/B, wireless and silicone free.
While some male customers thought it was ridiculous and perverted to wear a man bra, others were so excited about this new product, even saying “we’ve been waiting for this for a long time”.
“I like this tight feeling. It feels good,” Wishroom representative Masayuki Tsuchiya said.
This summer in Mainland China, men’s bras have unexpectedly been selling hot on one of the most popular online shopping site Taobao. The prices vary between homemade men’s bras (under 9 dollars) and imported Japanese men’s bras (around 44 dollars).
In Japan, the major consumers are middle-aged men, whilst in China, young people between 20 and 30 years of age seem to be quite interested in men’s bras.
A recent post about “Whether I should wear a man bra” has received the attention of many Chinese netizens. Some say it’s a perverted behaviour, while others argue that wearing men’s bras is good for your health and confidence, and that no laws disallow men to do so.
Up until now, men’s bras can only be purchased on the internet; in the future when there will be a larger market for them, we may be able to see them selling in shops. Only time will tell that whether men’s bras will become a new fashion trend or not.
